This plastic doll house bears a sticker GEORGES of Collins Street indicating that it was bought from one of Melbourne’s most fashionable stores.
This doll house has a moulded ‘Mattel 1980’ on its base and on the staircase. It is a Mattel Littles house, a Victorian-style mansion that was home to Mr and Mrs Littles and family. The house was sold unfurnished and numerous sets of furniture, both die-cast metal and plastic, were available for separate purchase. The playset must have been selected as a quality toy line suitable for Georges and this house seems to have some air of exclusivity as it is blue, in contrast to the widely sold orange and green Littles house.
For most of its life, 1883 to 1995, Georges provided exclusive goods and meticulous personal service to its customers. In 1892 George and George, as it was then, advertised its “annual show of Christmas goods” which included:
…Dolls' houses, furnished luxuriously, and furthermore situated in gardens where fountains play, are surely the very acme of such delightful abodes…
